Hi from Sydney

Hi, I'm Sam

I'm investigating buying a farm in the Nabiac / Taree area and really have no idea what I'm doing.  Have always lived in the city.  Can anyone suggest a book to read / course to do that woudl give me a starting point at what I should be looking at.  The only things I've though of are water availability and soil condition.

Thanks

Sam

Hi Sam,

Welcome to Farmstyle and the forum. You are not alone here, there are lots of other people in a similar position to you who are just starting out.

The types of thing's that you should be considering prior to buying a farm include:

- Water resources

- Legal requirements (section 32)
- Land capability and stocking rates
- Fencing
- Declared weeds
- Soil management
- Pastures
- Native vegetation quality
- Infrastructure (fencing, yards)
- Location to market and rural suppliers
- Determine property’s: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT)

Ideally you should have an idea of what you want to farm prior to purchasing, that way you can ensure that you purchase a farm will meet your needs.

Regarding books to read I would start with the basics like:
Once you get a better grasp on what you would like to do you can get then more specific.

Does anyone else have any other tips when buying a farm?

Charlie
