Pasture raised egg candling

Hi, We are embarking on a pasture raised egg business, starting with ~100 hens. At its peak, we are hoping to produce ~2000 eggs/day. Whereas, it is much more than a backyard endeavour, it is nowhere near a commercial one. My question is how is the candling done in this middle of the road scenario? It would be very labour intensive to do by hand, yet the commercial machines are very expensive. Hope someone can help Thanks Susan

Hi and welcome.

 

Free range eggs (real ones) yum!

 

I worked for the NSW Egg Board in Wollongong many years ago and the candling booth was a darkened booth with a system of rollers (wooden) that looked a little like large cotton reels and the eggs would sit in the space between the rollers. The rollers would turn the eggs as they ran along. Underneath this rolling conveyor belt was the light source ( Possibly a hundred watt bulb from memory). I remember the disaster and the work when one of the eggs which had black rot, would explode, the smell would linger all day!  

 

It should not be too difficult to make one with a little experimentation. However, I would advertise in the  rural papers and magazines as you may be able to pick one up second hand because egg producers often leave the business.

 

 I used to enjoy being on candling duty as it gave me a chance sit down for an hour or so.
