Olive newbies

Hi, just thought I would introduce myself. My wife and I have recently purchased a small olive grove of about 240 kalamata olive trees in Two wells south Australia. Having never had anything to do with olives before this has been a big learning curve I am currently in the middle of our first harvest. Only a small portion or our trees have produced this season and the olives are quite small, I'm thinking that could be because I don't think the have been pruned, fertilised or had regular water for some time?? We're hoping next season will be more productive. We are currently building a new house on the property and are planning on getting some chickens and a few sheep once we move in. Any tips and advice for a newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there and welcome.

There are olive  growers associations and  also co-ops around that can give you advice on growing, picking and curing olives. Most of these are accessable on line and a wealth of information about this is also available on line if you do a google search. You can check with you local library and also book sellers to see what is available on the subject too. Fence off you olive grove from any livestock such as sheep, goats or cattle, as they all just love olives and olive trees. The leaves of olives are also beneficial for human health , and livestock instinctively seem to know it's good for them also. I guess I don't have any more to add on the subject.

Good luck with your olives and your new lifestyle,

Barb
