My Introduction and a request for advice - raising sheep and poulty for private consumption in victoria

Hi

My name is Michael and I am moving to Indigo Shire near Wodonga VIC in the next few years to start a hobby farm on approx 7 acres. I am looking at getting a few sheep and other animals that I plan on raising and slaughtering.

The advice that I am chasing relates to raising some sheep and other livestock for private meat consumption:

- Is there any requirement for me to obtain an identification code from the DPI for the hobby farm if I am only raising some four legged lawn mowers which will end up in the freezer?

- Once I have purchased the sheep from the Rep at the sale yards is there any requirement to maintain the identification documentation/tags that comes with them if I am only going to be keeping them on my hobby farm until slaughter? Is there a requirement for me to record any new lambs that I may happen to raise from the intial buy of livestock from the sale yards?

- Does anyone know of any restrictions in Indigo Shire or in VIC with the DPI for slaughtering my own sheep for private consumption or for disposing of offal on my own property?

- Is there any restrictions for VIC that I need to be aware of for raising a few free range chickens and turkeys for private consumption?

cheers

Michael

Hi Michael,

When doing research a few years ago I often dealt with DPI and I found them pleasant to deal with and very helpful. They will be able to point you in the right direction and easily answer all your questions. One thing I would suggest though, is to keep all the documentation you get when purchasing new stock: you never know when you might need  it. Here are their contact details:
