Lowline vs. Square Meaters

Hi All

My partner and I are seriously looking into starting a small beef (Miniature) producing farm, in the southern highlands NSW (approx. 200 acres). We have narrowed the breed down to two, Lowline (Angus) or Sqaure Meaters.

Having researched both breeds online extensively, we would appreciate impartial advice on which breed may work, and be most profitable for us.

Brett & Rachel,

Personally I like the Square Meaters. We use them over our hefiers with great success and am even considering using them on all the cows (black baldies). Being  smaller breed they are easier to handle and paddock finish even in dry times so you tend to get better prices for the calves even though they can be a bit smaller at times but they are really chunky. In bad times any finished calves bring a better price but smaller may be a bit less in good times. Lately we have had more bad times so I am betting on this scenario at present? I shouldn't drink beer and cruize the internet.........

Does that make any sense?

Brett and Rachel,

I breed both Lowline and Ausline and have also used Square Meaters in a cross breeding program. All the small breeds are similar in that they are early maturing and whilst they won't grow to be as large as traditional breeds they will finish at an earlier age  giving you a significant advantage. You also need to work out where you intend to sell your progeny as this may help you determine which breed you choose as well.
