Can cows get chest infections?

Hello can anyone give advice. I have a cow that seems to be out of breath alot and sometimes coughs. I have now noticed

that my other cow seems to be doing the same thing. When it first started I thought it was because they were out of breath running up the hill to get their molassess each afterroon but I'm wondering if its something else. We have had alot of rain over the past 10wks... can being wet all the time make them sick?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome,

the answer is yes it could be due to an infection. However, they can also have a cough due to being fed very dusty feed in a small container such as a bucket. This can cause a nasty dry cough, because they can inhale the dust from the feed while they eat. As it has been raining a lot in your area, they may also be suffering from either a simple chest infection similar to a cold in humans, or even pnuemonia.

What symptoms do they have?

 

1. do they have a very dry and or, hot nose?

2. Is the cough wet or dry?

3. do they have any dicharge from the nose? If so, is it clear, or white or coloured?

4. do they seem to be depressed or not as energetic as usual?

5. Is their gate normal i.e. not limping or staggering?

My advice is, it's better to be safe than sorry and have the vet check them out as a matter of urgency. It could be something more serious than a simple cold, because there are a number of comunicable conditions which can cause a cough, from infections to parasites. You don't want something infectious spreading to all your stock or even worse, other live stock in the area.

 

If you don't mind, can you please let us all know what it turns out to be after the vet has checked them out. It's always a learning curve for all of us.
