Buying a rural property?

Hi,

my partner and I would like to buy a rural property initially for lifestyle/family/hunting purposes while we are still young and earning money in the city, with a view later to live on a farm later when we have kids.

we aren't completely in the dark, he comes from a farming family, and I've grown up spending a lot of time hunting on rural properties. We're both very hands on mechanical trades/engineering so we don't mind getting our hands dirty.

so to kick of our plans we were thinking of buying a property we can go to on weekends, and to help pay the mortgage agist cattle through an agent.

ive done a bit of research but need some advice:

- do agents agist cattle and fully manage them ie check them during the week when we aren't there? Obviously there would be a cost to this

- what exactly is the go with buying a leasehold property? If you rent it off the government why do you have to buy it? If you buy it do you also pay an extra rent over your mortgage?

thanks in advance :)

Hi Dana,

there is a good article called: Leasing land for agriculture, on this site. When you click on the link on the home page, in the article there is a link taking you to a publication by the Dept of Agriculture in W.A which may explain a lot of your queries.

Here is the link: https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/land-use/leasing-land-agriculture

regards,

Barb
