Good morning all Just a bit of a intro from my self about what My wife and my self are trying to achieve!

About 6 months ago we moved for my work and we have moved from the city to the country its always been our dream to have a little property to run some sheap and grow our own food. We have decided instead of buying a property at the moment we are going to rent one and have found a nice little 15 acre property to get in to hobby farming, We will be living around 6 mins away from the property my question is will this be ok, I plan on spending most of my time out of work there. We are looking at running Dorper sheep I'm just hoping it wil be ok not being there 24/7, We're not looking at getting rich out of this just it is something hat is close to us being close to the food we grow and feed our family .

Hi there,

finally out of the rat race, good on you! In answer to your question. It should be o.k. to leave the sheep unattended as long as they have three basic things:

1. good escape proof and dog proof fencing.

2. plentiful supply of good potable water

3. ample feed.

Be aware that they may also have to be treated for worms and also vaccinated against whatever diseases are prevalent in your area. You can ask around about this or contact your local primary industries dept.

If you are drenching the sheep make sure you check the witholding periods on the container. As the penalties for breaching these can be severe. A whole shipment of beef to Russia is currently held up because they have found a growth promotant in some of it.

cheers and enjoy your new life style,

Barb
