Portable milking machine

Hi, my friesian cow has just given birth 5 days ago and we have been advised that we will need to milk her as she is producing too much milk. We are doing this twice a day but it seems to take us ages to get alot of milk out with both of us doing it at the same time only due to us being new to the milking game.

Am wondering if anyone could give me some advice as to whether I should just buy a portable milking machine.

Have seen some advertised for approx $1400 (and others a bit cheaper for approx $800) but am a bit worried that after purchasing one someone will tell me that they are a waste of money. Any tips or suggestions would be great. Thanks

Hi Mollychick,

Welcome to the forum, great to have you as part of the community.

If you are short of time and not an experienced hand milker I would definately suggest trying one of the portable milking machines. Fresians can produce a large amount of milk even with a calf on them so it is only fair to milk the excess. Hand milking as you no doubt have found is a back breaking job let alone dangerous as you dodge stray cow hoofs and manure. I have had a bit to do with the Dairy Maid milking brand, although there may be other brands out there worth investigation. If you are looking to keep the cost down maybe you could try and look at buying a second hand machine.

Thanks Charlie. I would have bought the portable machine from Dairymaid but contacted them today and they dont have any in stock until mid June (and then i would need to wait 1 wk for postage) and I really cant wait till then, so have googled some other companies in Victoria and found one that i can purchase one. They are a lot dearer than dairymaid but I dont really have a choice due to needing one ASAP.

The company I will purchase one from is called De Laval in Warrigul Vic and I have negotiated a price of $1800 for a milking machine.

They originally wanted $2000 so I really would of liked to purchase from Dairymaid due to their cost plus i watched the youtube clip Dairymaid put on showing how to use the machine and was really impressed with the company but as I said i cant wait.
