Do you tick treat pigs?

I just lost a piglet to a paralysis tick.  I never knew they were susceptible to them!  So what do people generally do for ticks on pigs?  Or is it just leave it to fate?

Hi L-Plate,
Ticks in pigs do need to be treated, they can be picked off by hand...which would be difficult I imagine or treated with a chemical.  Then the pigs living areas need to be cleaned out also to stop reinfestation.  I did some reading about this a while ago, I will look it up again and post some more info for you.  
Your new farming venture sounds fabulous!

Unfortunately ticks will affect piglets early in life and there really isnt much you can do about it apart from monitor them twice a day.

The first week is the most susceptible time so you will have no choice but to check  them over constantly during the tick season or expect losses.

As the pig's skin toughens up it becomes less of a problem.

You could try a topical chemical like Taktic Topline but that is quite harsh on a little piglet but if the problem is severe, better than death I suppose. Warning though, this is an oily product so provide plenty of shade or you will roast your piglets!  This product has the same active ingredient as that used in Preventic dog collars.
