What do I do with 20 acres of grapes?

Phil. Newby. Just inherited 20 acres of grapes. 80% sultana grapes and 20% white wine.
I'm a sparky and know nothing about grape farming. Gulp!!
Grew up on farms but none had grapes.

Hello Phil,

Well did it make money last year? Are you up for living on the property, assuming there is a house there? If you are renting somewhere and you can live there I would reckon part time sparky and farmer would be IT! You do a wine course, maybe stretch the skills and make a bubbles variety and crack on with life.

Cheers,

Roland

Hi Phil,

I think Roland is right on the money, if the grapes have been making money and you have the interest/time to look after then keep them. For some small producers the fixed costs of maintaining the grapes can be more then them the income received.

Alternatively they can be pulled out and the paddocks returned to pasture.

Regards,

Charlie

hi phil,
Love Charlies view.
Would like to let you know that returning to pasture from vines is a bugger. the land is not fit for stock to be sold to the public. because of the chemicals put on it. in n.s.w and vic. there is a waiting period not sure of the details. I have been caught out thinking about purchase on old vine paddocks.
regards
sally
